Short communication Using a modified DNDC model to estimate N2O fluxes from semi-arid grassland in China

چکیده
Field measurement results showed that approximately 40% of the annual N2O losses occurred during the non-growing season and confirmed the importance of spring and autumn periods for assessment of total N2O losses from semi-arid temperate grassland in China. In the previous study, we found that the 7.2 version of Denitrification–Decomposition (DNDC) model had significantly lower estimates of N2O losses in spring and autumn time. In this study, three modifications, which mainly focus on the nitrification sub-model, the impact of soil frost and snow cover on gas production and emission, had been made to the model code. Based on field measurement, we concluded that modified version of DNDC model is more suitable for estimating the magnitude and seasonal trends of N2O losses from this region on a plot scale. By extrapolating the field data with our modified model, we estimated that the annual N2O emission rates for natural temperate grasslands of northern China is ca. 0:056Tg N2O–N y , i.e. ca. 40% lower than the estimate based only on field measurements (ca. 0:092Tg N2O–N y ). q 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Comparison of Whittaker and Modified-Whittaker plots to estimate species richness in semi-arid grassland and shrubland
Biological diversity and species richness have been declined throughout the world as a result of human activities. Measuring species richness is important in rangeland conservation to evaluate the status and trends of native plant species, detecting non-native species invasion and monitoring rare species. However, heterogeneity in plant distribution makes inventories difficult. In this study tw...
متن کاملDNDC: A process-based model of greenhouse gas fluxes from agricultural soils
The high temporal and spatial variability of agricultural nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soil makes their measurement at regional or national scales impractical. Accordingly, robust process-based models are needed. Several detailed biochemical process-basedmodels of N-gas emissions have been developed in recent years to provide site-specific and regional scale estimates of N2O emissions. Am...
متن کاملNitrous oxide fluxes from cropping soils in a semi-arid region in Australia: A 10 year perspective
Understanding nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from agricultural soils in semi-arid regions is required to better understand global terrestrial N2O losses. Nitrous oxide fluxes were measured from three rain-fed, cropped soils in a semi-arid region of south-western Australia on a sub-daily basis from 1995 to 2014 using automated chambers. Western Australia’s grain-belt includes 7 million hectares of a...
متن کاملA process-oriented model of N2O and NO emissions from forest soils 2. Sensitivity analysis and validation
The process-oriented model PnET-N-DNDC describing biogeochemical cycling of Cand N and N-trace gas fluxes (N2O and NO) in forest ecosystems was tested for its sensitivity to changes in environmental factors (e.g., temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, atmospheric N-deposition, soil characteristics). Sensitivity analyses revealed that predicted N-cycling and N-trace gas emissions varied w...
متن کاملImpacts of grazing intensity on denitrification and N2O production in a semi-arid grassland ecosystem
N2O production from denitrification in soils contributes to the enhanced greenhouse effect and the destruction of the stratospheric ozone. Ungulate grazing affects denitrification and the production of N2O. The short-term effect of grazing on denitrification and N2O production has been examined in several grassland ecosystems. However, the effects of long-term grazing have rarely been studied. ...
